10 Fun Facts about Ethiopia

Here are some interesting tidbits that I have read on other websites:

1. Ethiopia is almost twice the size of Texas.
2. It is the birthplace of coffee and they have official coffee ceremonies in the home. If you are offered coffee, it is very rude to decline. (what am I going to do?)
3. They claim the final resting place of the Ark of the covenant at a chapel in the holy city of Aksum, which used to be the capital of Ethiopia.
4. Ethiopia has 63 airports. Only 17 of them have a paved runway. YIKES, I hope we pick the right one :)
5. Often women feed the men with their fingers as a mark of love and devotion to them.
6. There are 13 months in the Ethiopian Calendar. Each month has 30 days and the last month has only 5 or 6. New Year is celebrated on September 11th and they are almost eight years behind our western calendar.
7. Homes are a traditionally a round hut called a Tukul. The floor is dirt, the walls are either sticks and/or mud, and the roof is made out of a long grass called Tef. Families like to use magazines or newspapers as “wallpaper” in their homes.
8. Traditionally, parents and children do not share a last name. Most kids take their father’s first name as their last name.
9. Did you know that a large portion of the Ethiopian population claims descent from King Solomon of Jerusalem and Makeda, the queen of Sheba?
10. Ethiopian television consists of just one channel. (Glad we are not taking Adrian :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. this site really helped!thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Every Ethiopian doesn't live in a hut. It's traditional as in any other country with ancient history. And it's name is not Tukul. It's called Gojo which means a hut. The roof is made of grass called 'Sar' not Tef. Tef is a kind of seed that we made enjera with. Our traditional common food. We are having one channel. yes!! Because of the democratic government America brought us through cold war.

    ReplyDelete
  44. its amazing to see the copy paste of former colonial minds growing ... break that thick glass of yours, so you can see better. Read ancient history of Ethiopia ... land of kings and emperors who conquered big colonizer countries like Italy. Yes we were great nation and will rise again despite evil western governments working day and night against us.

    ReplyDelete
  45. some peoples refer to Ethiopia a " the white biter nation" , considering the defeat of Italians by Ethiopians at the battle of ADWA.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow i really learned alot from this site! The reason im looking all this stuff up is because when i get a little older i want to go adopt like 3 or 4 children from here... :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I support what you did and congratulate you, but I have a Couple of Corrections:

-- We don't like decorating our homes with news papers, it's just that it proves to be the best thing to stick on the walls and reflect light that the rural part could afford.

-- It's not only women who feed men by the fingers. It is rather a common gesture that could be done by anyone to anyone as a sign of affection.

-- Ethiopian television now has 3 or 4 channels depending on the time, but it does not matter because most people watch more entertaining channels from the Arabsat Satellite broadcast which has much more diversity.

--FYI: Ethiopian Airlines is #1 in Africa.

    Cheers,
    Ethiopian.

  135. I always found it amusing how not only Ethiopia but the entire continent is portrayed. I am so proud to be an Ethiopian (Abyssinion) we have such rich history, resources, and amazing places to live. Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia google image and see the houses and building they never show. We have plenty of houses and buildings but only mention Huts :-/ like this blog. We have plenty of channels to watch it all depends on you have a dish or satellite . But I grew up without watching TV to much which I'm so glad about cause I got to play with my toys and friends, it also made me productive and wasn't exposed to so much violence. Ethiopains are one of the most beautiful people in the world that's why their are so many super models from there. There is no claiming Queen of Sheba it's a fact, we are also mentioned a lot in the bible. The Nile comes from Ethiopia which Egypt and other countries thrives from. Ethiopia is the only country that lives in harmony between Christians and Muslims and is the only independent contry in Africa that has never been colonized by Europeans. We have many kings and queens until the last Emperor Selassie died in 1968. The oldest bone found in the world is in Ethiopia named LUCY and another one was recently found thats older than Lucy is found and that was discovered in Ethiopia as well. Ethiopia is a 3rd world country so just like any country it has a poor area and a rich area please don't be close minded and always portray the bad, negative and poor parts only. If anyone on here would like to know more info on the royalties, Dallol volcano, queen Aida, Ethiopian art, Jewelry, dance go to my Pinterest page "DAY YOHANNES" in the Ethiopian board and you will find so much information and truth bout ETHIOPIA aka Abyssinia. I will keep updating constantly

  137. Ethiopia... is a sunny country with green highlands (where you get the top runners) as well as semi-arid low lands.
Home of COFFEE, the origin of NILE which is the longest river on earth, origin of HUMAN RACE, the keeper of THE ARK OF COVENANT, one of the earliest CHRISTIAN nation, the land of KING NEJASHI and the first country to accept MOSLIM RELIGION by wisdom - not by force, a home of more than 80 ethinic groups, the land of KING HAILESELLASIE who was one of the founders of the movement of AFRICAN UNITY..

  139. even though it is not complete information and presents a bit distorted image about Ethiopia, this is nice article.. you described what you saw and heard from your own perspective which makes your article genuine. then i want to say... despite its poverty, Ethiopia is an amazing country, because it is totally different from expectation of many..
    Thanks
